Memo unused — P.M.
PA Auckland The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said yesterday that his actions since taking office showed he had not accepted the advice contained in a memorandum written before the election by the Labour Party’s publicity director, Mr Simon Walker. The memo, made public by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr McLay, said the incoming Government should be projected as
shocked by the deceit of the outgoing Administration. It also recommended an “opening the books” exercise; Asked if a press conference today would follow Mr Walker’s advice, Mr Lange said it would follow his pledge to release the books “and let them speak for themselves.” Mr Lange added, “In the time (since) we have become the Government I have been careful not to be
involved in any witchhunt ... have been careful to let people see the facts, not the fury, and that stance will continue.” He said documents to be published today were prepared by officials, not by the Labour Party. "Let me say, with respect to Mr McLay’s initiative, if he thinks that is going to colour people’s appreciation of the objective facts which those reports will show, he is mistaken.”
