Pottery, carving, sculpture exhibition

The first of what is planned to be an annual exhibition of works by artists and potters throughout New Zealand will be held in Christchurch this week.

The exhibition opens in the Banquet Hall of Noahs Hotel today and will run for three days. Planning for the exhibition has been going on for several months. The sponsors and organisers, Tom and Penny Leighs, have travelled from Auckland to Invercargill arranging exhibits.

Featured in the exhibition will be pottery, carvings in jade, stone and wood, sculptures, photography and

weavings. Carver Michael Mason will have his carving table at the exhibition and will provide the opportunity to see a craftsman at work.

Other well known potters and sculptors will be in attendance at various times, to demonstrate their work and talk to interested persons.

Mr Leighs notes that there are many potters and craftspeople whose work will be featured in Christchurch for the first time.

Local potters include Tony Stevens from Diamond Harbour and Phillip Hadfield. Jan Harris, from Fair-

lie, will be exhibiting as well as potters from Auckland, Nelson, Gisborne, and Invercargill. Among the sculptors and carvers exhibiting is Mr lan Colthart, of Raumati South, whose carving in native matai is one of the highlights of the exhibition.

One photographer, Shane Neary, of Queenstown, will be represented. As well as sculpture, pottery and photography, there will be works by Janice Crampton, of Christchurch, who makes woven hangings. Glassworker Rena Jarosewitsch, also of Christchurch, will have works on display.
