Motherhood
Sir,—l realise that what most feminists wish is that women should have a range of ways to use their talents. However, the phrases almost inadvertently chosen, e.g. “motherhood alone does not satisfy,” cast a negative light on full-time motherhood; The impression given is that motherhood is a trivial pursuit, not worthy of an intelligent woman’s full attention. It is scarcely surprising that many women feel inadequate when they find themselves unable to do it as well as they had hoped. As well as having taken on an unsurpassably difficult job without prior training, a new mother has been led to believe that motherhood will be simple — scarcely a job at all. She feels she is inadequate at something she should) find easy. The value of motherhood must be widely and sincerely acknowledged before we can reasonably say that the status of women has been raised. — Yours, etc.,
