Train ‘overloaded’

PA Wellington A goods train carrying 55 tonnes of L.P.G. which derailed in a built-up area on April 17 was overloaded, according to documents leaked to the “Dominion” newspaper. The documents show that at least eight waggons of the train were overloaded — some by up to three tonnes — and that railway authorities knew they were before the derailment.

Two eight-tonne L.P.G. tankers were among 20 waggons derailed when an axle on an overloaded wag-

gon snapped as the train passed through Paerata, near Pukekohe. The derailment caused a major emergency. The Railway Corporation’s deputy general manager, Mr Bob Henare, said the derailment had been caused when an axle bearing on one waggon had overheated and caused the axle to fracture. Mr Henare denied that the waggons were overloaded to the stage of being dangerous, or that the overload was a governing factor in the cause of the derailment.
