Old rivals to meet

Runanga will represent West Coast in the annual Thacker Shield rugby league match for the sixth consecutive season when it challenges Hornby at the Show Grounds on September 16. A 24-14 victory over Cobden-Kohinoor last Sunday earned Runanga the right to play for the shield. Hornby, although beaten by Halswell in the Canterbury championship major semifinal the same afternoon, had already qualified as the winner of the premiership. On the basis of shield fixtures since the Second World War, the Runanga club has a distinct advantage in experience. It has appeared in 16 challenges, for nine wins, one draw (scoreless, against Hornby at Greymouth in 1969) and six losses. Hornby has had three wins, that scoreless draw, and five defeats at shield level. It was Hornby which brought the shield back to Christchurch by heading off Runanga, 19-17, at Greymouth two years ago. Last season Papanui repulsed Runanga’s bid, 26-20, at the Show Grounds.
