NZPA-AAP Melbourne A new Bass Strait daily crude oil production record of 79.1 megalitres (498,000 barrels) was set during July, the Broken Hill Proprietary Company, Ltd, said yesterday. BHP is a 50 per cent partner in Bass Strait oilfields along with Esso Exploration and Production Inc.
July production was 6.9 million barrels compared to 5.8 million barrels in July last year and 6.2 million in June, 1984.
Output of natural gas was 306.9 million cubic metres, 5 per cent higher than expected because of demand created by cold weather in Victoria, BHP
Natural gas output in July last year was 289.4 million cubic metres and in June, 1984, it was 273.4 million cubic metres.
BHP said its raw steel production during July was 546,000 tonnes, the highest level since August, 1982. In July, 1983, steel production was 510,000 tonnes and in June this year, it was 516,000 tonnes.
Production at the minerals division's wholly-owned manganese ore mine at Groot Eylandt in the Northern Territory fell in July because of a scheduled maintenance shutdown to 109,000 tonnes, from 190,000 tonnes in June.
