Pakistan gets cheap contraceptives

NZPA-AFP Karachi The United States is to help Pakistan to keep its population down by supplying SUSIOO million worth of contraceptives. The contraceptives will be at heavily subsidised prices in the next five years to help check Pakistan’s runaway population growth, Pakistani Family Planning Department sources said. Under a scheme reportedly approved by both the United States and Pakistan governments, Pakistan will receive SUS2O million worth of contraceptives from the

United States annually for the next five years. The contraceptives will be bought from United States manufacturers by the United States Agency for International Development at normal American market prices and supplied to Pak-! istan for much less. Pakistani authorities hope that the cheaper contraceptives will encourage Pakistanis to use them more, thus contributing to a decline in the country’s present 3.4 per cent annual population growth, rated among the highest in the world.
