Taxi-drivers to look at safety

Various options for increasing the safety of taxidrivers will be looked at this afternoon by delegates to the Taxi Proprietors’ Federation conference being held in Christchurch. It was hoped that some solutions to the problem could be found from the discussions, which would be held in closed session, said the federation’s secretary, Mr George Tyler, yesterday. A panel of people involved with safety measures would talk to delegates, he said. These included a crime prevention officer with the

Christchurch police, Sergeant Terry Blumberg and representatives from a firm which manufactured alarm systems and another firm which had developed a tracker system. Other sessions at the conference will include an address by the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, this morning and discussions on the total mobility concept during the afternoon. The conference was opened by the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, last evening. It will run until Thursday.
