Indians protest

NZPA-Reuter New Delhi Opposition parties will step up pressure today on the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, over the sacking of the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. T. Rama Rao, with a march through the streets of New Delhi. In Bombay, India’s main commercial centre, opposition leaders have also called a day of demonstrations. The country’s 19 main opposition parties, drawn together over the Rao crisis, said the march in New Delhi would be the first stage of a protest campaign. It will end with a rally addressed by opposition leaders including the former Prime Minister, Mr Charan Singh, who is heading the opposition’s action committee. Next Saturday has been called a nationwide “Save Democracy Day.” Mrs Gandhi, under attack from the press and opposition, yesterday denieu any part in the sacking of Mr Rao. The Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Mr Ram Lal, dismissed Mr Rao last week, saying he had lost his majority in the State Assembly.
