P.D. for second burglary

Periodic detention for six months was the sentence given by Judge Jamieson to a young man in the District Court yesterday earlier convicted of burgling the shop premises of Computer Malcolm Bruce Richards, aged 18, a clerk (Mr B. Frampton), had admitted breaking into the premises, with an associate, on December 21, last year. As a result of the burglary, computer equipment and a video recorder, worth $4789, were stolen. The Judge said the offence occurred 10 days after the defendant was convicted for similar offending for which he received a sentence of periodic detention. “It is clear the earlier punishment did not mean enough for you,” said the Judge. In addition to periodic detention, the Judge ordered Richards to pay $1325 as his share of the compensation sought. He was also put on probation for 18 months. Mr Frampton said the burglary was a job performed for a fixed price for another person. All of the property taken by his client had been recovered. Mr Frampton urged that a further sentence of periodic detention would be an appropriate sentence.

CARD FRAUD A man who used another person’s credit card on 14 occasions to obtain goods and services worth $7BO, was remanded on bail to September 6 for a probation report and sentence. Mark William Dowling, aged 19, unemployed (Miss E. H. B. Thompson) admitted 14 charges of fraudulently using the credit card between January and July. Sergeant W. J. McCormick said the card was posted to the defendant’s address where the intended recipient had formerly lived. Dowling had used the card on 14 occasions and most of the property obtained was for the use of his de facto partner who was expecting a baby. The defendant said he used the card because he was short of money, said Sergeant McCormick. CHARGE DENIED A plea of not guilty was entered by a man charged with receiving a video recorder and camera, valued at $6OOO. lan Briggs, aged 32, unemployed, is also charged with breaking and entering Shipleys Video. The police say the offences took place on July 24. On both charges he was remanded on bail of $lOOO to October 18 for a defended hearing.
