Cars called in to check likely defects
PA Wellington Some Honda Civic models and one Accord model will be recalled as a result of the discovery of a defect in the front seats, which are supplied by a New Zealand component manufacturer. The general manager of the New Zealand Motor Corporation, Ltd, Mr B. S. Carson, said the fault involved 1981 to 1983 Honda Civics and 1981 model Accords and had been found during normal checking procedures. “The seat fault results from insufficient welding of the recliner mounting,” said Mr Carson. “We accept that the potential exists for the back of a front seat to give way, and this raises the question of safety,” he said. While N.Z.M.C. was not aware of any accidents resulting from the seat faults, the company was determined to resolve the
problem as soon as possible, he said. “We have already started contacting owners of the cars involved, but we realise that some of the older models will have been resold at least once,” Mr Carson said. “We appeal for the cooperation of • all current owners of the models in question. We ask that they approach their local N.Z.M.C. dealer at the first opportunity,” he said. At dealers’ premises, service staff will inspect the seats to establish if there is any damage. If there is none, and no potential for damage, the car will be released to the owner. “If the componentry is faulty, immediate arrangements will be made to repair the seats. As this procedure is a relatively simple one, the vehicle wifi not be required for more than a day,” said Mr Carson.
