Lewis beats Curren

NZPA-Reuter Jericho, New York The unseeded New Zealander, Chris Lewis, has beaten the eighth seed, Kevin Curren, of South Africa, 6-3, 6-4, in a JUSISO.OOO tennis tournament in New York. Lewis won the only two service breaks in the match. He broke Curren’s service early to lead, 3-0, at the start, taking advantage of Curren’s backhand errors, and then broke service again in the fifth game of the second set. “I hustled and got a lot of balls back,” Lewis said. “I used the lob a lot. It’s my best shot.” Curren said: “I didn’t serve and volley enough. He covers the court very well.” Saying that he and Lewis “are not the best of friends to put it mildly,” Curren expressed annoyance that they have been paired as doubles partners here. Lewis said he was happy to be teamed with Curren. In another tournament in Ohio, John McEnroe, the world’s No. 1, has been beaten by Vijay Amritraj, of

India, in the first round. The unseeded Amritraj beat McEnroe 6-7, 8-6, 6-2, 6-3, to hand the American only his second loss in 61 matches this year. Other seeds to lose included the Australian, Pat Cash, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist who lost to the American, Ben Testerman, 6-4, 7-6, and the tenth-seeded American, Scott Davis, who fell to John Fitzgerald (Australia) 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.
