Province put first

If the Canterbury rugby team should be short on inspiration in the next few weeks, it need only cast a glance in the direction of two of its members, Jock Hobbs and Warwick Taylor. Yesterday the pair made known their decision on an invitation they had received to play at Twickenham next month in a game to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the ground. Both have declined, for the reason that they feel their first priority should be to Canterbury. “It was a difficult decision, and we gave it a lot of consideration. To play in that sort of company would have been a tremendous opportunity,” said Hobbs. “But the game comes at a crucial period of the season for Canterbury and we both feel that our loyalties

should be with Canterbury for the rest of the season.” Hobbs said that neither he nor Taylor would have had any problems getting leave from their jobs and although he had discussed the matter briefly with the Canterbury coach, Alex Wyllie,

there had been no pressure from this quarter. “The decision was entirely over to us, and while we would have been away for only one game (Counties on September 29) others could have been affected,” he said.
