Pamir reunion next month
Former crew members of the legendary barque Pamir will meet in Auckland for a reunion next month. Many young New Zealand men gained their sea legs on the vessel, which was the last square-rigged sailing ship to fly the country’s ensign. The New Zealand Government seized the Finnish-owned Pamir as a prize of war in Wellington in 1941. The four-masted vessel was then run by the Union Company to carry cargo to North America for the rest of the war. She sailed through waters infested with Japanese submarines, but ended the war unscathed. Among the Lyttelton shipping personalities to have sailed on her are the Harbourmaster, Captain Jack Barbour, and the Deputy Harbourmaster, Captain Jim Partington. The former chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, Captain Roy Champion, commanded the Pamir for a time. The 93m vessel remained in New Zealand hands until 1948 when it was decided to hand her back to the Finns. She returned to Europe in 1949 and worked carrying a variety of cargoes until disaster struck on September 21, 1957. While working for a German organisation, the Pamir struck a violent storm near the Azores in the North Atlantic and sank. Only six of her 86strong crew survived.
