Results of holiday sports tournaments are:— Buller gained only its third victory in 10 years of competing in the South Island under--18 rugby tournament when it beat Canterbury Country, 1413, on the first day of the championship at Burnside Park yesterday. Results were:— Pool A: Buller 14, Canterbury Country 13. Pool B: Marlborough 25, West Coast 4. Pool C: Southland 16, Canterbury Blue 14. Pool D: South Canterbury 16, Mid-Canterbury 10. PA Ashburton Otago recorded a decisive win over its arch rival, Canterbury, in the opening round of matches in the South Island under-16 rugby tournament at Ashburton. Otago led 10-0 at halftime after playing into a strong breeze, and scored four tries in its 20-3 win. Other scores: Southland 14, Mid Canterbury 6; Malborough 32, Buller 13; North Otago 26, Nelson Bays 7. LEAGUE Canterbury avenged its narrow loss aginst Wellington on Sunday by beating Taranaki, 12-0, on the second day of the national 15-year-old schoolboy rugby league tournament in Greymouth, yesterday. Wellington scored its second successive win with a 16-8 victory over Waikato after Waikato led 8-0 at half-time, and now leads the A section. The other prime contender, Auckland, had the bye yesterday. B section matches resulted: Bay of Plenty 26, West Coast 0; Midland 16, Northland 4. SOCCER Canterbury began the New Zealand ' Junior Football Association’s national under-12 tournament in Wellington yesterday with a draw and a win. Canterbury recorded a 1-1 draw against Mana yesterday morning, but beat Franklin, 21, in the afternoon. Today, it will meet Manawatu and Wellington. Wellington leads the section, having recorded two wins yesterday. Six teams are competing in each of' two sections, with the top two going through to the semi-finals later this week. There was high scoring on the opening day of the Adidas New Zealand secondary schools' soccer tournament in Christchurch yesterday. Taieri High School suffered
heavy defeats in section D of Pool B against Palmerston North Boys! High School and Papanui High School, 9-0 and 10-0 respectively. Lincoln High School was also on the receiving end of a 10-0 hiding from Nelson College. The former New Zealand goal-keeper, John Morris, is coaching the Avondale College team, which began with a win and a draw, while the present, international, Alex Metzger, is the coach of the Waitakere College team, which had a win and a loss in its first two games.
