Meredith avenges loss
Dave Meredith avenged his loss to his old adversary, Brian Kirkness, in the semifinals of the Canterbury billiards championship last month when he won the provincial open title against Kirkness last night. In an extremely close three-hour final Kirkness had a 68-point lead at the half-way stage. Meredith came back and with 10 minutes to play the scores were tied at 611. Meredith went ahead with an unfinished break of 51 to win, 691-611. Meredith scored the
highest break of 102 and Kirkness had a break of 94. Meredith also achieved the highest break of the tournament when he reached 139 in a quarter-final. Results.— Quarter-finals: Ken Giles 559, Russell Young 464; Kirkness 469, Bill Burney 368; Meredith 736, John Barry 227; Peter de Groot 366, Sid Baker 275. Semi-finals: Kirkness 507, Giles 454; Meredith 637, de Groot 253. Final: Meredith 691, Kirkness 611.
