Gambling investigation
NZPA-Reuter Manila The National Bureau of Investigation is investigating a horse race gambling syndicate said to be operating Between the Philippines and Australia, the Philippine news agency said. It said the investigation was requested by the Australian Embassy in Manila after the arrest early this month of 10 Australians alleged by police to have been involved in the operation. The Australians, arrested in Angeles City, 80km north-west of Manila, were later released. There was no immediate comment from the Australian Embassy. Police said the Australians used short-wave radio to receive live broadcasts of races in Australia and accept bets on them. Gambling on horse racing, \except those officially recognised byTthe Government, is illegal in'the Philippines.
