Tirana leading chance at Oamaru today

Serial correspondent Dunedin Tirana, which began his racing career with an impressive win at Oamaru 12 months ago, will return to the course a leading fancy for the Big Softie Handicap, the second leg of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double and treble today. Tirana, which has been away from racing for 11 months after having a bone chip removed from a knee, showed he was forward when he won at the Riccarton trials yesterday week. His trainer, John Parsons, won with Graikos and McLean at Wingatui on Friday. Tirana’s win in August of last year was over 1200 m against a field of three-year-old including Sea Poppy and Royal Sceptre, both subsequent winners of four races, General Beaufort, Ariage, a dual winner at the recent Grand National meeting, and Pinafore. Tirana had two further starts for a second to Gaffa in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton and a win at Orari. Black Arrow, the smart two-year-old last season, is also makingg a fresh start in the Big Softie. He had three wins, allon his home track, Riccarton, a second, two thirds and a fourth from eight starts. His unplaced run was in the Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie. Noble Jewel and Seafarer are a likely quinella for the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Both should appreciate the drop in class. Seafarer beat Noble Jewel by half a neck over the same distance, 1600 m, at Washdyke last month when in receipt of half a kilogram. Noble Jewel meets him on a kilogram better terms, today, on what promises to be firm footing.
