Jackpot drew crowd
A $500,000 free jackpot was a major factor in the success of the meeting at Alexandra Park on Friday evening, Auckland Trotting Club officials said yesterday. The jackpot was not struck, although one man picked six of the seven winners required. His other selection, Slugger, finished fourth. “It was the best winter meeting we have had for a long time,” said the club’s secretary, Mr Jim Patterson. The attendance was close to 9000. Three more $500,000 free seven-race jackpots will be run at Alexandra Park this year, each by a club with a course-only totalisator licence. Mr Patterson said he was unsure whether his club would operate another such jackpot. “My committee has not discussed it and, anyway, it would depend to a certain extend I suppose on irisurance arrangements.” n
