Whitbread yacht to visit

The new maxi yacht Lion New Zealand, which will compete in next year’s Whitbread Round the World Race, will make a promotional visit to Lyttelton early next year. The yacht is being built in the North Island and is expected to be launched in November. Its skipper, Peter Blake, has asked the Lyttelton Harbour Board for a suitable berth at the port between January 24 and 26. Blake said the yacht would take part in the Sydney to Hobart race in December and on its return to New Zealand would call at all main ports. The visits are part of the New Zealand International Yacht Racing Trust’s fund raising programme to help with Lion New Zealand’s running costs. While at Lyttelton the yacht will be open to the public. Several sailings have been organised for invited guests. The Harbour Board has agreed to give the 24m yacht the same service and facilities accorded to the training vessel Spirit of Adventure. These included free berthage at the pilot cutter’s wharf and space for stalls to be set up on the tug wharf. Mr J. E. Mannering said the board should do everything it could to help with the project "It is a very important visit by such a yacht,” he said. “New Zealand is now becoming a little more famous for sailing achievements."
