Standards pact
A memorandum of understanding, to be signed in Wellington tomorrow, .is designed to ease export trade by harmonising standards requirements between New Zealand and Australia. The signing ceremony will take place in the office of the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Caygill The signatories will be Mr D. R. M. Pinfold, director of the Standards Association of New Zealand, and Mr J. R. Paton, director-general of the Standards Association of Australia. The memorandum will record a joint commitment by the standards association of Australia and New Zealand to meet the objectives of Article 12 of the Australian New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement. In essence, the basic principle of these procedures is that every effort will be made to achieve a harmonised approach on standarisation matters. Further, that where one country indicates an interest in, or concern about standardisation activities of the other, then every facility will be offered the concerned member State to participate in the particular standardisation activity on an equal footing with all other interests.
