Auckland lead levels
PA Auckland Smog readings in central Auckland are similar to those recorded on Britain’s busy Ml motorway, say Auckland City Council health inspectors. Initial results from a study of Auckland lead levels have shown particularly high readings near the town hall. The health inspector Mr Stuart McLaren, said that deposited lead during the study’s first month was recorded at 330 milligrams per square metre. “That is similar to read-
ings taken on the Ml’s centre strip, but it is too early to become alarmed yet,” he said. The study will continue until next June when a more accurate assessment is possible. “Obviously, if the high readings continue we will have a problem on our hands,” said Mr McLaren. The study’s main aim is to compare lead-deposit levels with traffic density for a pollution guide. The' council has 20 recording points round Auckland.
