Festivals upset pubs
NZPA-Reuter Wuerzburg, West Germany Pub owners in the Bavarian city of Wuerzburg are threatening to close their bars in protest against the mushrooming number of drinking festivals in the area. A landlord,' Wilfried Kulterer, said he had the
support of 120 other innkeepers for his strike threat and for a planned march on the town hall. He calculated that this year there would be about 6000 public beer and wine festivals in the surrounding region of Franconia, which combines winegrowing with the Bavarian beer-drinking tradition.
“Not only are we losing a lot of business but it is particularly infuriating to see participants using the local pubs only to go to the toilet,” said one landlord. A city government spokesman said there was no law banning public parties, “and you don’t need much of an excuse for one.”
