TV comedienne robbed by two ‘Samurai’
NZPA-AP Los Angeles Two youths who pleaded guilty to robbing the home of the “Laverne and Shirley” star, Penny Marshall, while dressed as armed Japanese warriors have been sentenced to three years in a youth facility. Anthony Pierson, aged 18, and Daniel Sheppard, aged 19, had each pleaded guilty during a preliminary hearing on June 26 to robbery in the March 13 incident when Miss Marshall, who played Laverne in the comedy series, was confronted by the two intruders in her Hollywood Hills home. Sheppard also pleaded guilty to using a nunchukka, an outlawed martial arts weapon consisting of two metal or wood bars connected by a chain, during the robbery. Pierson pleaded guilty also to using a Japanese Samurai sword in the robbery.
The two, who have been in jail in lieu of ?U520,000 (about $40,600) bail each since their arrest, had faced
a maximum of seven years in county jail. Miss Marshall, aged 41, told the Court that one of the intruders threatened her, but then one apologised, when he recognised her as the star of “Laverne and Shirley.”
She said that under duress she gave one intruder SUS4OO (about $810) in cash and signed over about $3OOO (about $6100) in traveller’s cheques.
