Previn may tour
Andre Previn and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra are likely to tour Australia and New Zealand in May, 1988, says the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay. Such a visit was unusual for an orchestra of that stature, he told a meeting of the Christchurch Town Hall board of management yesterday. “While in Los Angeles recently, I met the orchestra’s general manager and he was really quite keen for the visit to go ahead,” said Sir Hamish. “Andre Previn would probably come too as he has
recently been appointed the orchestra’s permanent conductor.” Financial arrangements among the interested parties would have to be negotiated. This would probably be done directly with the management of the various venues. The orchestra was a large group, with 120 players and six tonnes of equipment to be transported. However, it was likely that the orchestra would pay its own costs of getting here, said Sir Hamish. The question of sponsorship would also have to be looked at, he said.
