N.Z. yacht lead

NZPA-AAP Honolulu New Zealand was in a strong position to win the Pan Am Clipper Cup yachting series midway through the 775 nautical mile final race around the Hawaiian Islands last night. The over-all platings plotted by the race control centre and the Waikiki Yacht Club had the New Zealand team well clear of its rivals.

Exador (Ray. Haslar), Sundance (Delvin Hogg) and Shockwave (Neville Crichton), with their fleet platings of first, third and sixteenth, were holding a 95-point lead over the defending United States team. The Americans found trouble mastering the condi-

tions throughout the day and their team yachts, Checkmate (Monte Livingstone), Camouflage (Al Schultz), and Tomahawk (John Arens), dropped in over-all standings to be placed nineteenth, twenty-sixth and twenty-eighth. The brilliant 40ft sloop Exador had turned in an incredible performance in the last 24 hours to be fourteenth over all

in the fleet and only trailing.

the maxi yachts, which are double the size of Exador, by 45 nautical miles. Naturally, with this sailing exhibition, Haslar and his crew have taken a commanding lead on handicap, leading the small Japanese sloop Mimi (Hisao Kanai) by a comfortable margin with Sundance third.
