Animal laws

Sir,—J. Sharp (August 8) is correct — there are groups looking to the present Government to pass meaningful legislation in favour of animal rights. The Animals Protection Amendment Act, rushed through last December in indecent haste with little regard for the

petition submitted bearing 129,000 signatures, does nothing for the animals it purports to protect. With past endorsement in principle of the “declaration of the rights of animal and plant life,” which has been proposed to the United Nations, it is felt that the present Government 'should confirm its stand. Halting the supply of unclaimed pound dogs to Greenlane Hospital by the Auckland City Council would be evidence of this stand. The Mayor of Los Angeles, Tom Bradley, heads a council which in 1982 outlawed the supply of unclaimed pound animals to experimental research establishments. Now voted host city for the 1990 Commonwealth Games, the Auckland council should follow the Los Angeles example. — Yours, etc., ALMA and REG LANGLEY. August 11, 1984.
