Harbour Board tonnage up

Trading and financial results for the Port of Lyttelton for the nine months of the year ended June show substantial improvements compared with last year, according to the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s general manager, Mr lan Brokenshire. In his monthly report to the board yesterday, Mr Brokenshire said tonnage was up 40 per cent for the year compared with the same period last year. The board’s financial statement for the period reflected an improvement over budget, he said. However, interest charges of more than $619,000 paid during June had had a detrimental effect on the period’s profit Mr Brokenshire also reported the recent visit by the president of the Confederation of West Australian Industry, Mr Bill Peart Discussions between the board and Mr Peart covered the present and future potential of trade between Canterbury and Western Australia.

Mr Peart is well-known in Lyttelton having been the managing director of Vickers Hoskins, Ltd, from 1963 to 1981 during which time he was involved in successful negotiations with the board for the construction and commissioning of the Cashin Quay container crane.

Mr Brokenshire reported to the board that advice had been received on a joint submission from the member of Parliament for Lyttelton, Mrs Hercus, and the Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr Wetere, to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Tapsell, requesting an urgent review of the increased freight rates to the Chatham Islands.
