Peace groups to co-operate

PA Wellington Soviet and New Zealand peace groups will make further efforts to develop cooperation between peace activists in the two countries, according to a communique of the meeting between the delegation of the Soviet Peace Council and the New Zealand Council for World Peace, released this week. The Soviet delegation was in New Zealand from August 9 to 13 at the invitation of the New Zealand council Both sides demanded an end to the arms race, the communique said. “They demand to stop the deployment, production, and development of nuclear

weapons everywhere in the world. They stand for the non-use, prohibition, and total liquidation of nuclear arsenals, against the development of new barbarous weapons of mass destruction, militarisation of outer space, and for general and complete disarmament.” The groups agreed to improve the exchange of information about peace activities between the two countries and to co-operate in the development of peace forums or conferences in the Pacific. The New Zealand Council for World Peace had accepted an invitation to send a delegation to the Soviet Union in 1985, the communique said.
