Five artists exhibit
The work of five New Zealand artists, each with a different speciality, will go on display at the D.LC. fashion showroom in Christchurch from today until August 25. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to view the pottery of Stephen McCarthy, the porcelain and bronze sculpture of Bob Gibbs, the bronze sculpture of Muriel Moody, the paintings of Isobel Mcßeath, and the palette paintings of Michael McK. Ponder. The artists’ work was exhibited at New Zealand House in London last year, and they have been invited
to exhibit in the United States. Each has achieved recognition in their own right, and they have all held many solo exhibitions. Stephen McCarthy’s pottery workshop is in the Motueka Valley, near Nelson. His work reflects his interest in plants and geological formations, and he makes domestic ware as well as decorative pots. . The human form and condition is represented in the sculpture of Bob Gibbs, who lives in Waikanae. Muriel Moody is also from the Wellington area, and says her work is greatly influenced by Picasso. Some of
her bronze sculptures are on display at the Five Artists exhibition. Another Wellingtonian, Isobel Mcßeath paints in oil and watercolour. Her range of subject matter has been greatly broadened from having travelled extensively with other artists over the last 10 years, painting and studying. Michael McK. Ponder’s paintings are created only with knives, and he concentrates on depicting solitary items within an over-all scene. Mr Ponder’s home and studio is in Blenheim. The exhibition was officially opened last evening.
