From the loom
Four Auckland weavers will exhibit their work at the C.S.A. Gallery from today until August 25. The four are Jeff Healy, Adrienne Marten, Yvonne Sloan and Judith Ann Wilson.
Jeff Healy was born in the South Island and began weaving in 1974. He went to London in 1979 to attend the London College of Furniture as a part time student and obtained a London City and Guilds Diploma in Textiles. He has exhibited in London in 1981, and in Wellington and Auckland. His motifs are derived from architecture, with clean shapes and sharp angles. Adrienne Marten has taken part in several shows and received the New Zealand Wool Board Awards and the Irish Fisher Award in Pakaranga. She incorporates tapestry and block weave techniques and draws her inspiration from the Waitemata Harbour and
surrounds. Yvonne Sloan has exhibited in Christchurch before in a joint exhibition with her husband, lan Spalding. She began weaving in 1963 ans studied at Sater Glantan in Sweden. She has been teaching for 17 . years for Adult Education and has won the U.E.B. Award, the A.N.Z. Bank Award and has several major commissions. Her inspiration derives from the criss-crossing of the thread and the subtle interplay of colour.
Judith Ann Wilson was born in Australia and has exhibited extensively in the North Island. She will show hand-dyed, handspun, woven floor rugs and says she is fascinated by colour textures and the blending of wool from a variety of sheep breeds. Handspinning and dyeing allows her greater control over the materials used and the visual impact.
