Chch campaign launched
The band played, the Wizard cast a spell, and the Love Beautiful Christchurch campaign was started in Cathedral Square at Munchtime yesterday. The campaign was heralded by the arrival of the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, the chairman of Keep New Zealand Beautiful, Inc, Sir Patrick O’Dea, and the member of Parliament for Avon, Mrs Mary Batchelor. They arrived in the Square in City Council rubbish trucks, preceded by the Christchurch Police Band.
After a Maori welcome and speeches by Sir Hamish, Sir Patrick, and Mrs Batchelor, the Wizard was called on to cast a spell calling for the success of the campaign.
The Civic Pride Campaign began last Fridy when rubbish clearing ceased in the Square. Twenty hours later the rubbish was again collected, and what had gathered in that time was on display in the Square yesterday to demonstrate the habits of Christchurch people.
