Woman jailed for theft
PA Tauranga A woman who stole $ll,OOO in cash from a Tauranga wool shop was sentenced to 12 months jail yesterday. Ronella Aramoana Soper, aged 22, a solo parent, of Tauranga, appeared for sentence in the District Court at Tauranga. At a previous hearing she admitted stealing the money on July 17. Counsel, Mr A. M. C. Blair, said Soper took the money on the spur of the moment. She had been in town and wandered into the back of the shop, found the money, put it in her jacket and walked out. Mr Blair suggested that it was “irresponsible to say the least” for the owner to leave such an amount lying around. Judge Wilson disagreed with Mr Blair’s observation about the owner of the money. If someone had money for banking they should be able to put it down in the back of their shop without it being stolen, he said.
