Aust. keeps police tally on Cyprus

NZPA-AAP Canberra Australia will not halve its contribution to the civilian police force on Cyprus, as first reported. The Prime Minister, Mr Hawke, said that the Australian Federal Police contingent to the United Nations Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus would be maintained at its present strength of 20. A previous official announcement of a decision to halve Australia’s contribution drew strong protest from local Greek and Cypriot communities. The Federal police had sought the reduction because of administrative difficulties caused by the Cyprus commitment. •■ Mr Hawke did not say why the decision had been reversed. He simply said that it had come after dicussions with the Foreign Minister, Mr Hayden, and Acting Special Minister of State, Mr Beazley, who has responsibility for the Federal police.
