NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easy under selling pressure yesterday as traders procrastinated and then succumbed to a lack of firm indicators from overseas.

At 5 p.m. New Zealand time the all-ordinaries index was 6.1 points down at 727.8 points, the all-industrials marker was down 3.8 points at 1017.3, and the all-resources index was 7.6 points down at 501.6. BHP and its contributing shares both lost 20c to 1060 and 700 while Bell resources shed 30c to 470 and CSR 7c to 328.

In the metals and golds group, EZ Industries and Western Mining both fell 12c to 624 and 346, CRA 10c to 550. Seven-cent cuts took Bougainville to 168, Greenbushes to 103 and North Broken Hill to 228, Peko 6c to 470, and Poseidon 5c to 325. Central Norseman, however, followed the gold price, rising 20c to 500. In the oil and gas sector, Santos dipped 12c to 610, Crusader 8c to 240, and Ampol Exploration and Bridge each 5c to 290 and 270.

The banks were mixed as Westpac eased 1c to 381, National added 4c to 340 and ANZ rose 3c to 485.

The weaker industrial sectors included developers and contractors, electrical and household durables, automotive, light engineering, and merchants and agents. Philip Morris fell 30c to 640, Elders IXL 15c to 400, Bundaberg Sugar and lEL 10c to 210 and 636 respectively, Email 9c to 136, and Pioneer Concrete and Hooker each 7c to 151 and 168 while 6c cuts found Rothmans at 964, Humes at 154 and APA at 312.

News Corp, however, added 20c to 1070.
