Medicare for visitors

NZPA-AAP Canberra Disabled persons visiting Australia for an international convention in November will be covered by Medicare during their visit, the Minister of Health, Dr Neal Blewett, has announced. About 100 disabled persons would visit Australia for the first Asian-Pacific regional convention of Disabled People’s International, to be held in Adelaide from November 2 to 9, Dr Blewett said. Usually visitors were not eligible for Medicare benefits unless they were staying in Australia for at least six

months, but many of these visitors were not well off financially and the cost of short-term private health insurance “could be a real burden,” Dr Blewett said. Under the Health Insurance Act, Dr Blewett has authority in special cases to confer Medicare eligibility on visitors to Australia.
