Campaign against vandalism of road signs

An extensive Automobile Association campaign against vandalism and theft of road signs begins today. The two-week campaign, conducted by associations in the South Island and lower half of the North Island, follows up recent successful “signbreaker lawbreaker” campaigns run by the AA (Canterbury). Its aims are to raise public awareness of the importance of New Zealand’s network of signs and to reduce their breakage. An amnesty is offered on souvenired signs, and the AA will pay a $2OO reward

to anyone who supplies information leading to the conviction of vandals. - The campaign is timed to coincide with the August school holidays. An association report notes that there is usually an upsurge in sign breakage during holidays, and it is also hoped that young people will be attracted by the offers of amnesty and reward. The AA also asks motorists to watch for offenders on roads leading to skifields, which are often the targets of vandals and souvenir-hunters at this time of the year.
