‘For the young and the young at heart’

Nikkis — a sister shop to one of the same name in Riccarton — has opened in the Northlands Mall, next Lane’s Appliance Centre, Ltd.

Like the Riccarton shop, it offers women’s fashion garments in sizes from 10 to 18 — “for the young and the young at heart,” in the words of the store’s fashion buyer, Mrs Dorothy Smith, who has been in the fashion business for 15 years. Elegant, modern decor — brass features, many mirrors and lots of lighting — give brightness and sparkle to the new shop. Three muted shades of peachy-coloured moire' taffeta add texture as well as sheen to the walls. Light also reflects off ceramic tiles above the lighted canopy over the display racks.

The range of garments

includes separates and casual day wear but the shop specialises in after-five and special-occasion garments.

As a fashion store, Nikkis emphasises variety rather

than quantity, and the stock is right up with the latest European fashion trends. This means garments in natural tones and rich ceramic colours, though other shades are included to be

sure there is “something for everyone.” It also means plain fabrics, fine stripes and small spots. There are many silky-look fabrics for after-five wear

and, for day wear, pretty, textured cottons, many featuring stripes. Draped effects are another aspect of the current fashion scene, with cowl necks popular.

Necklines are high or, in some cases, plunging. Asymmetry is popular, too, often taking the form of two-colour garments, with diagonals and sleeves of a different colour. Panel bodices are still “in” and cummerbunds of a different colour from the dress. Other fashion details include pin tucks, frills, flounces, and round, pearllike buttons. Sequins are back again, too, and some dropped waists — aspects of “the 20s look.”

The staff of the new store consists of the manageress, Pat Crowe, and her two sales assistants, Rosalie Gleason and Judith Waddell. All three have been chosen for their pleasant, helpful manner — friendly but not “pushy” — and all have the experience to give sound advice, if required.
