Man and wife jailed for perjury

PA Auckland A married couple have been jailed for six months after admitting that they gave false evidence under oath before a High Court judge. They had admitted lying in a civil case between themselves and Broadlands Finance, Ltd, over hire-pur-chase transactions. After the hearing, the presiding judge, Mr Justice

Thorp, referred parts of their evidence to the police to investigate. As a result, Patrick Grant Leland, aged 41, a company director, and his wife, Carol Ann Leland, aged 42, of Hikurangi, pleaded guilty of perjury. When they appeared for sentence before Mr Justice Casey in the High Court at Auckland yesterday, their counsel, Mr Roger Chambers, said there was a tragic

background to the case. The affair had 'its origins many years ago and related to the couple’s financing plans with Broadlands. Mr Chambers said they were not spurred on by avarice but because, caught up in a situation which went out of control, they were now bankrupt. Sentencing the cpuple, his Honour said perjury was regarded seriously by the Court.
