Chilly wait for guests

PA Wellington About 270 guests in various stages of undress spent a chilly hour on the streets in downtown Wellington early yesterday when a fire was reported in the James Cook Hotel. Guests who detected smoke from air ducts on upper floors awakened other guests by knocking on their doors about 2 a.m. The hotel’s manager, Mr Michael Jones, said that the fire was traced to a smouldering rubber casing on a water pipe in a cupboard on the fourth floor. There was little damage.
