Drivers’ Union gets acting secretary

Mr Don Cunninghame has been appointed acting secretary of the CanterburyWestland Drivers’ Union. Mr Cunninghame, a former president of the union, has been an organiser for the union for six years and has been a member of the executive for about four years. Mr Liggett was removed from office by a secret ballot of the union’s members this month. He had been secretary for 11 years. He is president of the New Zealand Drivers’ Federation, but the federation’s council will meet in Wellington on Monday to consider that position. Mr Liggett has not been invited. The special meeting of

the union executive yesterday lasted almost four hours. Mr Liggett attended, but left after it was resolved that he leave. The union’s president, Mr Dave Nutira said after the meeting that the executive had heard the official and final result of the secret ballot from the returning officer, Mr Jim Anderson. The result confirmed that the members wished Mr Liggett be removed from office forthwith. Mr Nutira said the executive had also resolved that Mr Liggett should return the union car and keys no later than today.
