C.A.R.E. call rejected

PA Auckland A call for a Royal Commission on Maori schooling has been rejected by the outgoing Minister of Education, Mr Wellington. The Citizens’ Association for Racial Equality asked the Governor-General, Sir David Beattie, to use his special power to hold an inquiry into the “ability of the State education system to meet Maori needs.” Sir David received the request in April and passed it to Mr Wellington for a decision. The secretary of C.A.R.E., Mr lan Mitchell, said the Minister had written saying he saw no need to hold an inquiry. “His rejection of our call shows how out of touch he is with Maori needs,” Mr Mitchell said.
