Aust steady

NZPA Sydney Surprise developments in take-over situations added interest to proceedings on Australian sharemarkets yesterday. At the close, the all-ordin-aries index was 0.1 points lower at 671.4, the all-industri-als index was 0.4 points higher at 960.5, and the all-resources index was 0.5 points down at 446.9. Among the special situations, Nicholas Kiwi rose 15c to 420, prompting speculation that Castlemaine Tooheys may be forced to lift its 400 per share cash bid for the company. Industrial Equity picked up about IM AOG shares at its increased offer of 140, but the stock closed 5c lower at 135. A surprise offer for Group Holdings, the money-market arm of the Melbourne stockbroker, A. C. Goode, gained quick approved from directors, who hold 62 per cent of the issued capital. The new offer, from Spedley Securities, was pitched at 286 per share, 36c above the recent unsuccessful offer by Pinewood Hall Pty, Ltd.
