Sweden drops weightlifters

NZPA-Reuter Stockholm Sweden yesterday dropped two banned weightlifters from its Olympic team after deciding that attempts to get doping charges against them reversed before the Los Angeles games were hopeless. The chairman of the Swedish Weightlifting Federation said Sweden had originally hoped to get the ban against Mikael Persson and Hans Larsson lifted at a meeting of the International Weightlifting Federation in Los Angeles at the weekend.

But the federation chairman, Curt-Erik Hermansson, said he realised it was now too late. Persson and Larsson were banned from taking part in international competition for two years after doping .ests at the European weightlifting championships in Spain last May showed they had been using anabolic steroids. The Swedish federation expressed strong doubts about the accuracy of the tests on the grounds that ' previous tests in Sweden had detected no trace of the banned hormones.
