Morris dropped

PA Wellington The Northlander, James Morris, is a surprise omission from the New Zealand table tennis teams to play a three-test series against Japan next month. Morris, aged 31, was ranked No. 2 in New Zealand last season. Because of farm commitments he had been unable to play many tournaments this year, and withdrew from the North Island championships.

Morris is a former national title-holder and captained the New Zealand team to the world championships in Japan last year.

The national selectors, John Lelliott, Alan Tomlinson and Frank O’Gorman, have had to decide who should be the team’s No. 3 behind the Aucklanders, Barry Griffiths and Peter Jackson.

They have named a different No. 3 for each of the three tests. North Shore’s Malcolm Darroch will play in Palmerston North on August 25, Graham Lassen, of Auckland, in the Hutt Valley test on September 1, and Malcolm Temperley, of North Shore, at Auckland on September 3.
