Sir Richard to retire

PA Hastings Sir Richard Harrison, member of Parliament for Hawke’s Bay for 21 years and Speaker of the House of Representatives for the last six years, will retire from politics. Sir Richard, defeated by Labour’s Dr Bill Sutton in the snap election on July 14, told the National Party’s Hawke’s Bay electorate committee on Monday evening that he would not be a candidate in any future election. Sir Richard had held Hawke’s Bay since 1963, when he succeeded the late Mr Cyril Harker. During his political career he served as a junior Government Whip, senior Opposition Whip, Chairman of Committees, and in 1978 was appointed Speaker to succeed the late Sir Roy Jack.

In 1980 he was made a Knight Bachelor in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Sir Richard, who is 63, said from his Takapau farm yesterday that he felt he had given enough years of service to Hawke’s Bay and it was time he gave more consideration to his wife and family. “In any case it is time they had a new, younger candidate,” he said.
