Glider lost wing

A glider which crashed near Masterton on Saturday, killing the pilot, lost its entire wing section in midair before plummeting to the ground. The pilot was Earl Kenneth Rivers, aged 59, of Masterton. The loss of a wing was confirmed yesterday by an inspector of air accidents, Mr John Goddard, who said wreckage from the aircraft had been scattered over a large area of farmland. The Masterton police said that pieces of the glider in which Mr Rivers was killed were spread over more than 40ha. The glider, owned by the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club, crashed just after being released from a towplane above the Mangatariri Valley.
