Wheelchair games begin

NZPA-AP Stoke Mandeville, England Prince Charles has opened the seventh World Wheelchair Games at Stoke Mandeville, England, and after praising the determination and courage of disabled people at the formal ceremony met many of the 1100 competitors from 40 nations.

The Olympic torch was carried into the stadium on Sunday by Terry Willett, a member of the 115-strong British team. The British discus thrower, John Harris, took the Olympic oath on behalf of all the athletes. Then 1110 pigeons, one for every competitor, were set free to symbolise peace and unity.
