Five of Europe’s top journals recently conducted a joint survey of their readers to discover who were rated as the best 10 (dead) European writers of all time. The journals were “The Times,” “Die Zeit,” "La Stampa,” “El Pais” (Spain) and “Lire” from France. The results: 1, Shakespeare; 2, Goethe,; 3, Cervantes; 4, Dante; 5, Kafka; 6, Proust and Mann, equal; 8, Moliere; 9, Joyce; 10, Dickens.
