Angus bulls sell well
A rising two-year-old bull from Te Mania stud, Parnassus, topped the national Angus bull sale at Palmerston North this week with a price of $17,500. It was bought by Mr R. J. Storey, of Feilding. Mr F. F. Wilding’s Te Mania Stud sold another bull at $7500 and S. L. and B. E. Chambers, Ltd, Southbridge, sold one at $3700. Other leading sales were:— Murchison Estate, Marton, $13,000, $9500, and $5300; S. W. G. Craine, Feilding, $10,200; Kauere Stud, Tirau, $5OOO, $3300 and $3000; Rawhiti Farm, Waipukurau, $5500, and $4000; P. J. Shortall, Feilding, $3800; Robwood Stud, Gisborne, $3700; J. N. and B. F. Mcleod Trust, Feilding, $3700; C. E. Naim, Waipawa, $3500. At the recent annual general meeting of the Canter-bury-Westland Angus Association the prominent South Canterbury breeder, Mr Alex Darling, was conferred with life membership. His contribution to the work of the provincial assiciation has been considerable and he is the immediate past president of the New Zealand Angus Association. He was elected president of the world Aberdeen Angus Secretariat at the fourth World Angus Forum in Christchurch in 1981. The speaker at the Can-terbury-Westland annual meeting was the agricultural attache to the American Embassy, Wellington, Mr Ben Thompson. He spoke about the market in the United States, the effects of the voluntary dairy.
beef reduction scheme, the P.I.K. (payment in kind) grain programme and a recent drought, with their consequent effects on imported beef prices. In April, 1985 the Canterbury Westland Assocition will be hosting the national Angus ward tour and a comprehensive programme has been arranged. Angus breeders and many commercial cattlemen from throughout New Zealand will be attending and they will visit the prominent studs in Canterbury as well as some commercial properties. Chambers (Southbridge), T. W. C. Lyes (Hokitika), W. G. S. Chisnail (Hawarden), K. J. Page (Parnassus), H. E. Jenkins (Darfield), G. A. H. Hargreaves (Geraldine), B. J. Johns (Culverden), R. M. Ford (Maungati), J. R. Fraser (Pleasant Point). Annual trophies presented were: © McKenzie Trophy, awarded for most points over the show season, went to P. J. Gardiner. © The Thomas Borthwick and Sons Trophy, awarded for the top pen of Angus calves sold at auction, went to D. Urquhart and Sons, “Grange Hills,” Mackenzie Country.
